Cobham Dairy
Kent
A print in the manner of blue and white delft tiling found in contemporary dairies honours the whimsical nature of this James Wyatt building. The figure of a milkmaid taken from an early 19th Century catalogue of rural dress appears with a cameo of the dairy beyond, evoking pastoral scenes of Toile de Jouy. On alternating tiles, ‘the cat that got the cream’ licks its paw beneath a crescent moon borrowed from the Darnley coat of Arms; a playful nod to the family who commissioned the dairy’s construction in the grounds of Cobham Hall. The right blue was specially mixed to sit harmoniously against newly restored leaded windows with stained glass borders.
