Tixall Gatehouse
Staffordshire

The lone carving of a scallop shell which still survives on Tixall’s exterior was the starting point for this design, set in a scrolling surround adapted from a detail of a 17th Century print of the gatehouse and its now vanished charge Tixall Hall. Colours again were informed by the building’s exterior – grey and gold for its characteristically blackened sandstone – and matched existing upholstery in similar shades.
